Caring and Sharing

Infant's caps

Our craft club, in a retirement community, was looking for a project a few years ago and a nurse suggested infant's caps for each newborn to wear home. So about 10 of us started crocheting and we take about 40 caps each month to one of the local hospitals. This is a continuous project as they always need more. Some of us had never used a crochet needle before but after a couple of lessons we were going strong. I, personally, had always wanted to but could not get the hang of it, but after sitting and watching a lady make one I tried and the first year I made 125 caps, so you can teach an "old dog new tricks", I am 82 years old and was 78 when I made my first cap. Most of our yarn is donated, so we do not only use Lion Brand Yarn. We also use any colors available so they do not have to be all pink or blue. Yes, we did have one write up in the local newspaper a couple of years ago. Most of us do the crocheting at home but if the club does not have another project to be working on we will sit as a group and crochet and socialize meeting for 2 hours once a week. We also make the "Heart Pillows" for the hospitals, each heart patient is given a heart pillow and this will go home with them. This also is approximately 40 per month. So those who does not crochet, sew, or knit can always stuff pillows.
