Caring and Sharing

Prayer/Share Therapy

Who knew that crocheting and knitting could do so much for so many?!
As we look around us today, we see women who are hurting in so many ways - depressed, overworked, out of work, caring for kids, parents and spouses and facing health issues that put their lives on hold. I was one of those who pulled out my crochet hook, knitting needles and yarn stash to get me through some long days of inactivity and depression. I began making shawls (homespun!), scarves (Hometown USA), washclothes (Cotton cones)and baby blankets (Babysoft) for various ministries at our church. My mind became engaged and my creative juices started flowing as I experimented with Lion Brand free patterns and beautiful yarns. As I worked, I prayed for the known or unknown woman or child who would be wrapped in the work of my hands. It became a therapeutic event - something that healed me and them at the same time. The actual craft that I do is my personal prayer/share therapy but several organizations distribute my handiwork and the work of many other women through our church. These groups include Tiny Stitches - a group that makes layettes for disadvantaged children going home from local hospitals, Sit and Stitch - a modern day 'quilting bee' where women bring their projects and enjoy time together as they make shawls and scarves for women who are in need of a personal touch of encouragement, New Beginnings - a group home for women just out of prison and a Guatemala school sponsored by our church where we wrap scarves 'made with love' around women and their children. As we weave beautiful yarns, God uses the results to weave physical, emotional and spiritual healing in the lives of the recipients. It is a privilege and a joy to see women with cancer not only warmed physically but warmed emotionally with a prayer shawl or to see a woman just out of prison receive their first birthday gift ever, or to watch as a mother wraps her infant in a babysoft blanket instead of an old workshirt as she leaves the hospital. It is hard to judge who is most blessed by our efforts but if I had to say, I guess I would have to selfishly say me! Thank you to Lion Brand for keeping the art of creativity alive through patterns, yarn and ideas!
