Knit & Crochet for Cancer Patients

Our group was started in March of 2010 and we knit, crochet or sew items that we can donate to different organizations. This project was taken on by Lisa Cote as a project thru the Candia Community Womans Club. When I started this project I didnt know how to crochet or even hold a hook so I contacted my Memere to teach me and now I am addicted!

Our main project is to make caps, scarves and lap blankets for patients at local Cancer Centers in NH that are undergoing chemotherapy. So far we have donated 510 caps, 50 scarves and 38 lap blankets. We have received many thank you letters and yarn donations directly from cancer patients that have received our items. It is so rewarding to hear back from the patients and to know how grateful they are to receive a handmade item to make them more comfortable.

In October of 2010 Stitching up the World made 175 caps for 104 Transportation Company which is an Army Troop stationed in Afghanistan and based out of Columbus Georgia. Their missions include delivering equipment, food, vehicles and weapons to other locations that are in need. This project will keep the men and woman warm while they are serving our country. Thank you for all those that choose to serve our country and for everything you do each and every day!

Stitching up the World has also donated 44 caps to New Horizons in Manchester NH which provides food and shelter to those in need.

We are always looking for more volunteers to join our group so we can ecpand our donations to more organizations. All levels of needlework are welcome. We love to teach volunteers who have always wanted to learn to knit or crochet. Each month on the 3rd Thursday we meet from 7-9 at the Smyth Public Library in Candia NH to drop off items we have made in the past month, share patterns, teach new volunteers and munch on a few snacks while we socialize. We also have received donated items made as far as California.

A few articles have been published in our local newspapers on our charity group and hope to spread the word more as it is such a rewarding project. Please visit our website for more information on our project. www.candiawomansgroup.org
