Krafting for Kids & Seniors

A year ago, a number of us at Venable LLP in Washington, D.C., admired the knitting and crocheting our colleages were doing. Instead of simply accepting the praise for their work, it was decided that we'd start a class and we all could take part! So the fun began, with no goal in mind except to learn. Then, after receiving support from our employer, we reserved a conference room each week, and began knitting and crocheting for the benefit of The Hospital for Sick Children, followed by the Washington Nursing Facility. Our motto was "Each One Teach One"--as new members of the group showed up, someone would show her how to get started, how to do different stitches, how to create a beautiful border. Each Thursday's hour of "yarning" is exhilarting--there's no better support group, as each stitch and completed project gets as many Ooohhs and Aaaahs as new born baby!

Our trips to various craft stores and sharing of "who has the best sale this week" are well documented among the core group. We've used many Lion Brand Yarns including Baby Soft and Baby Homespun, Pound of Love, Homespun, Chenille Thick & Quick, and Jiffy--we visualize a blanket, booties, lap wrap, or bonnet, and off we go to the Lion Brand aisle! It takes a lot of yarn to create the more than 150+ items we have donated to the Hospital for Sick Children, and nearly 100 items for the wonderful residents of The Washington Nursing Facility. Many of these senior residents only have doctors as visitors and nursing staff as family--the joy a handmade blanket or pair of adult booties can make in their lives is worth donating one lunch hour per week to the cause (of course, we dontate more time, but we gather weekly during our lunch break to "yarn" together!)

The benefits received are strictly for the heart and soul. After each delivery, we can't wait to get back at it and start on the next project!
