Caring and Sharing

While so many of us love making things for ourselves and our families, many in the Lion community go further, creating for those in need. Join us in this section and be touched by these true stories of caring and sharing submitted by Lion Brand readers.

Project Linus Tucson Coordinator

I have been crocheting since I was seven years old. I am 42 now, and when my husband and I moved into a new house for more space, he looked in the hallway linen closet and found I had stacked it full of blankets I had crocheted. Everyone in the family had a blanket/afghan too. He looked at me and told me I really need to do something with the blankets. That is when I started with an internet search.

That was six years ago and I located Project Linus. It is a national organization that has chapters all over the United States. The chapters help out with children that have had tramatic experiences in their lives, from surgery at a hospital to family trama. I took over as coordinator for the Tucson Chapter in January of 2005 after being just a volunteer. Our chapter has 250 volunteers that make blankets for our children. Since January, we have donated 1200 blankets to our area agencies. It is a shame that so many children are in need of these "HUGS" but then on the upside it is such a warm feeling to know we can provide them with a blanket and security when they need it most. Our volunteers range in age from 10 years to 92. There is no age limit when it comes to making a blanket. We also have volunteers who don't crochet or sew, but they help the organization with deliveries and pick-up sites, so we can get them counted and labled and out to where they are needed. I can really say that this is one of the most benificial charities and much needed. If anyone wants to help out, make a blanket for a child, contact a chapter in your area by visiting

The picture is one of our funtions, a tea and blanket day, hosted by Ruth.
