Blanket Project for Children Survivors of Dog Attacks

LionBrand, Thank you for listening to my story. Being involved in dog rescue and training we are concerned about dog abuse and the human dog relationship. But we also need to be concerned with the safety of our communities and we need to spread the education on bite prevention. Last year I had been working on some bite prevention materials and I came across a story of Kaylie, a little girl that had been attacked by her fathers family dog. Kaylie touched my heart and being an avid crocheter I decided to make her a blanket to help give her support during her next surgery. Kaylie and her family really appreciated the blanket and our Blanket Project grew from there.

I started hearing about other kids that had survived attacks through a victim support group online and started making blankets for other kids one at a time. I love using Lionbrand Heartland as my favorite yarn for blankets but due to cost I use Lionbrand Vanna's Choice the most.

To date we have made 12 blankets for Children who have survived dog attacks. The word about our group is slowly growing and we have had a few private yarn donations as well as several finished squares donated ready to be assembled into a blanket. Starting this summer we will be forming a local crochet/knitter "Meet-n-Complete", where we will get together on a regular basis and complete squares that can be combined to create blankets. Our goal for this year is to provide 100 blankets, yes there are that many children who have survived dog attacks!

I am constantly spreading the word about our Blanket Project to let others know that every little bit helps. From one skein of yarn, a couple of completed squares or an entire blanket, it all helps and these kids really love the blankets. The last blanket I made the little girl sent me a card telling me she "has the blanket on her bed every night". This is a note I received from the mom of a young boy that we created a blanket for, "he loves it! thank you. its so soft his brother tries to take it. He keeps it on his bed. thank you again".

These children go though a lot after an attack, many of them have surgery after surgery trying to repair the damage. Offering these comfort items may seem small but to the children its huge. Letting them know that they are not alone, they are supported and in the thoughts of others puts a smile on there face and gives them support to be strong.

Thank you for listening to our story and for creating such wonderful yarn that allows us to make such soft support items for these incredible kids.

Sincerely, Carmie Bednar Active K9 Rescue Foundation http://www.activek9utah.com/blanket-project.html
