Caring and Sharing

Stitch for a Cause

I am a middle school English teacher and started a community service project last year called Stitch for a Cause. It is open to all members of our school community, including students, parents, and teachers. No experience is necessary to participate as myself and other parent volunteers help teach novice crafters to knit or crochet.

This year, the group is knitting and crocheting baby blankets and apparel to donate to the NICU at Norton Suburban Hospital in Louisville. Past donations have been made to the Infant Resource Project and Home of the Innocents. Last year we donated over 110 items (blankets, sweaters, hats, etc.), over 550 baby items from a school-wide "baby shower", and almost $300 in cash.

Stitch for a Cause has many members, ranging from third graders to grandparents! Many other individuals and businesses have donated supplies and handmade items created at home.

Stitch for a Cause meets every Thursday afternoon. We have a midday time where the kids can come during their study hall, lunch and recess, and an after school time.

The group is especially meaningful to me because this year I had a pregnancy complication two weeks into the school year and delivered my twins Benjamin and Althea 14 weeks early. Benjamin stayed in the NICU for almost 3 months and his sister Althea is still there seven months later. The parent volunteers were wonderful and took over the group so it would not fall apart. The middle school principal helped organize the students and support these volunteers. The group actually doubled in size from last year to almost 60 students. The students also made two blankets for my twins which are very dear to me.
