Caring and Sharing

While so many of us love making things for ourselves and our families, many in the Lion community go further, creating for those in need. Join us in this section and be touched by these true stories of caring and sharing submitted by Lion Brand readers.

Hats for Headstart

Many years ago, I was reading in a trade magazine about a group called Caps for Kids. I thought this was a really great idea and started making hats using the pattern that was provided with the article.

When I had about 25 hats made, my sister-in-law came for a visit. When she asked me what I was going to do with all the hats, I told her about the program which required that I send the hats to Texas.

My sister-in-law works for the local Head Start Program here and asked me if I would consider giving her the hats for the many needy children that she deals with every day.

I am now on my 13th year of making these little hats for their organization. I've made well over one thousand hats. I have developed my own pattern which I freely share with anyone who is interested. I have received many generous donations of yarn from different yarn companies and from anyone with extra yarn who hears of my project.

I urge everyone with extra yarn on their hands to spare a few hours making hats. They are needed in every school, every church, and every children's organization.

And, if anyone wants my pattern, I'll be happy to share.

Joanne Minnie
