Caring and Sharing

While so many of us love making things for ourselves and our families, many in the Lion community go further, creating for those in need. Join us in this section and be touched by these true stories of caring and sharing submitted by Lion Brand readers.

Afghans for Veterans

I belong to Close Knits of Culpeper. We knit/crochet 6” x 9” rectangles to be put together into afghans. The afghans are given to Veterans in the hospital.
I became involved in Close Knits of Culpeper after seeing a notice in the local newspaper askingfor knitters/crocheters to make afghans for veterans in the hospital. I have enjoyed knitting and crocheting since I was a young child and saw this as a way to help out others using my skill. We use acrylic yarns so use Pound of Love and Vanna’s Choice yarns from Lion Brand. Our group puts together 12-15 afghans per month. We have two meetings per month – one to work on rectangles for the afghans and one to lay them out in patterns. We all work on our own on rectangles and about four of us work on crocheting them together on our own time. All told, I probably spend about 20 hours per month on the project. Others spend much more. One of our members makes more than 300 rectangles a month. Over the years we have probably given afghans to over 1,200 veterans. I would encourage others to work on such projects for the satisfaction they would receive knowing they are helping others while engaging in a craft they already enjoy. The local media has done several articles on the group. The group members who have delivered the afghans have reported the visible smiles seen when they arrive with the afghans. We have received thank you notes from recipients. Our group welcomes donations of any kind and welcome new members. Some of our members never attend a meeting but deliver many rectangles. Each and every one counts.
