Caring and Sharing

While so many of us love making things for ourselves and our families, many in the Lion community go further, creating for those in need. Join us in this section and be touched by these true stories of caring and sharing submitted by Lion Brand readers.

I have been making "Prayer Shawls".

I grew up knitting my mother owned a Yarn Shop. So I was taught by the best -- my mother and grandmother! I work at Crandell Funeral Home and I and two of my co-workers have been knitting Prayer Shawls for family friends and for Hospice.

Since the middle of January of this year I have made 9. I use the pattern I found on your web page, called "Knitted Easy Triangle Shawl".

I had heard about the group called Prayer Shawl Minstry. The first one I made was for a dear friend with breast cancer. Then the 2nd went to another friend's daughter whose mother in law had breast cancer. The list goes on.....

But then the place I work got involved with the local Hospice. We took training class and learned more about Hospice. I found out that they had a young woman with Melenoma. I asked with anyone in Hospice makes The Prayer Shawls and they said "no". So I had the casework aide ask the young lady what is her favorite color. She liked green. I made her a nice soft green shawl and put it in a gift bag with a nice card to give to her.

I was told she wears it all the time, even when she cannot stand blankets from the pain, she wears her shawl.

It filled my heart to know this young lady loved her shawl so much.

I was talking to are Hospice contact person and she said they had another young women with Adrenal Gland Cancer. Again she was asked her color but she didn't have one but I had heard that her bedroom is done in maroon. She got a pretty maroon mohair one. I'm Catholic, so as I knit I say Hail Mary's.

The different kind of yarns I been using is Lion Brand Jiffy Quick & Easy Mohair, Lion Brand Jamie, I like to mix the 2 together.

I have been asked to sell my Shawls but then that would take away the Love I put into them. I treat them (the Shawls) like they are my children. I do put my heart and soul and prayers into them and I hope they bring blessings to those that get them.

God Bless,
