Caring and Sharing

veterans warming items

My mom and I knit and crochet lap blankets, scarves and blankets for veterans at the stand down. The stand down is held every october here in libby, mt. We are both on disability and making these items gives us a great joy and purpose. My mom originally started crocheting the above mentioned items for native americans on the reservation. When that opportunity closed she took it upon herself to do the work for the veterans at the stand down. We are the only people in our community who do this, even though we have tried to interest others, they have said that the veterans don't need these handmade items because they get so much from the government. But our veterans truly enjoy the items that we make, and the fact that they are all original. In one year we made 218 lap blankets, 386 scarves and 601 twin size blankets. We work on these items daily, this year at the stand down 971 veterans and their families enjoyed a day of haircuts, a homemade chili dinner, a food box to take home, boots, sleeping bags, foam sleep pad, socks, long johns, a duffle bag filled with socks, towel, 3 tshirts, flashlights, hats, and our items, as well as a variety of hygiene items. Included in hygiene was shampoo, conditioner, shave gel, feminine hygiene, soap, razors, and body wash. The media has never done a story on us because we stay pretty low key. There is only one knitting supply store in our little town, but they are extremely upscale and have denied our request for yarn donations. The veterans always seem touched by our handiwork and always say thank you when we give them the items they need.
