Caring and Sharing

While so many of us love making things for ourselves and our families, many in the Lion community go further, creating for those in need. Join us in this section and be touched by these true stories of caring and sharing submitted by Lion Brand readers.

Prayer Shawl Group & Snowflake Fair

A group of knitters in our community of different faith backgrounds heard from one knitter about a prayer shawl group she joined in the southern United States when she "winters" there. She presented the information to us and we have been holding meetings about 9 months of the year (no December, July, August meetings) on the third Wednesday of the month. We have tried to hold the meetings in various churches but this one is in a central area and has the most knitters at the moment. Our meetings are 1 1/2 hours long with prayer, blessings, and of course knitting. We also keep a record of who receive shawls. In our 5-6 year history we have given out prayer shawls to over 200 people who like the comfort of the shawls. People who have benefited have been those who are grieving, suffering from illness, and going through hard times (including flooding this past year). We started out with and introduce newcomers to the Lions Brand book on Prayer Shawls because it has a simple pattern for newcomers with no knitting experience to learn the knit and purl stitches as well as cast on and cast off stitches. The book also features information on the meaning of colours. We have expanded to use other patterns and create our own. We have used the Lions Brand Homespun yarn suggested in the Prayer Shawl pattern but have also used knitting worsted yarns. We have become known in our town without the help of local media. We have received thank you cards and verbal comments about how much the shawls are appreciated.
Our Snowflake Fair in the fall has several knitters at the United Church who make mitts, hats, scarves, cowls, etc. of various yarns (mostly worsted). This year one knitter made the Quick Ease pattern for hat and scarf and sewed the scarf ends together to make a cowl for a teen. The pattern was much faster to make than the worsted patterns and very warm!
