Notes on a Prayer Shawl
Created By: Michael Leins
Pattern Source: other:

I encouraged my daughter to become involved in the Prayer Shawl Ministry. She does not go to my church, but another Methodist church downtown. She never did one before and she has her own set of problems. After I gave her the skeins of Homespun yarn, she returned to me a shawl and this poem. I just thought I would share.

Notes on a Prayer Shawl

This yarn is soft.

Not what I'm used to using,

Cheap and harsh with no give to it

Much like a cynicís attitude,

And mine if I want to admit it

This is soft like a whispered plea

Late at night when the world sleeps

And only God hears

The color of a half forgotten dream

On the edge of memory

Not something carelessly handled

It takes patience to work properly

Concentration and proper attention

Much like the prayers

That go into each stitch and every row

It asks me to go slowly and be mindful

Not simply so that I donít make a mistake

But to comfort me as much as the person

Who will one day hold it close

Be still, my sweet child.........

A whisper, barely felt.

I am with you always

You are precious in My sight

And not for all you do

Or even for who you are

But simply THAT you are....and that you are mine.

I feel as if I could purr,

Much like the cat that naps beside me

Content merely to be close

To the one he adores

The work of my hands will embrace someone

With a warmth and calm unexpressed

But it embraces me now quietly

With the peace

That truly passes understanding

So much from something so simple!

Truly, beloved.....God is in the details........
