My Version of the Road/Sampler Scarf
Created By: Sheila Aune
Pattern Source: other:

I have crocheted since I was a child, but had never tried knitting. I was always too busy working and taking care of my boys to try to learn this new skill. That all changed when, due to a series of surgeries and the complications that came with them, I suddenly found myself with a horrible amount of time on my hands. I had been unable to work for a couple years, and had been keeping my hands busy with various crochet and needlework projects, when I discovered this Lion Brand web-site. I kept looking at all these great patterns for knitted items and wishing I knew someone who knitted, someone who could teach me. That's when I found the "learn to knit" part of this wonderful site and gave it a try. I was thrilled with how easy to understand the instructions and illustrations are. Still, I'm sure it was probably a really funny sight, me sitting here in front of my computer, talking to the screen, my needles and the yarn as I learned the basic stitches. My first real project is the scarf in the pictures. I used the Lion Brand Wool yarn and went nuts trying different stitches and patterns, some that I made up as I went. The scarf is loosely based on the "Road Scarf" or "Sampler Scarf", but by the time I finished it, it was my own invention. Anyhow, in the five months since I learned to knit, I've finished many other projects and have even learned to make socks! I learn something new about knitting everyday, a new stitch or technique to improve my knitting. But even though I've picked up dozens of patterns, and books on knitting, my favorite place to look for new ideas is still the patterns listed here, from Lion Brand Yarn.
