This hat was for my son's friend, who said she was thinking of a hat with ear flaps and liked the Vanna's Choice yarn in taupe. I found a pattern for a hat that used the same worsted gauge as the Vanna's Choice.
I liked the way it framed the face with an inch-and-three-quarter seedstitch edge and ear flaps (which get picked up after body of hat is finished) and then the even stockingknit for the crown. The fasteners are I-cords and I added the pompom and tassles using the coordinating Taupe Mist.
We loved the way the ties can be looped together at the top so that the tassels hang whimsically from the pompom when ear flaps are not needed.
A basic formula for constructing your own hat pattern would work well here so you can choose any yarn and gauge and still succeed.
