Hugs for My Grandchildren
Created By: Kathy Mathosian
Several months ago I learned to knit. While searching through books for 'easy projects', I came across one for a prayer shawl. Hmmm, I thought the perfect project which later became the perfect gift of love for my Grandson Kyle. Kyle was scheduled to have spinal surgery in the summer.
I reviewed the Ministry website and became even more enthused as I learned about colors and their meaning, the symbolism of the trinity stitch, specific prayers and what a prayer shawl truly means.
As a new knitter, I did not know anything other than alternating knits and purls across each row. I did not know how to knit the Trinity stitch so I improvised the symbolism of three. I used 3 colors that I believed represented my 7 year old grandson, I inserted 3 rows of purls throughout the all knit blanket.
I packaged up my gift, included a letter to my son and daughter-in-law so they would know and understand the meaning and love behind this blanket. I also included a photo that really said it all. I found a great poem on the ministry website that was perfect for my creation. My husband found a picture of Kyle and me when he was 3 months old. He placed it as a watermark with the poem printed on photo paper.
His new blanket is his favorite, he sleeps with it every night, brought it to the hospital and yes, the surgery was a great success!
I have since created 2 more blankets for my other 2 grandchildren, Dylan and Avery. No surgeries, just blankets full of hugs, kisses and love...
