PVBC Prayer Shawl Ministry
Created By: Vicki DiFrancesco

A co-worker showed me a book she had purchased and was making a shawl for a friend graduating from high school. That book was the LionBrand Prayer Shawl Ministry book. I sensed that the Lord was laying on my heart a prayer shawl ministry at church so I took the idea to my quilting group to pray & think about. We then had several women in our congregation who were going through cancer treatments so I decided to make them a shawl. The quilters decided to join in & the group began. We had some experiments in the beginning as I was the only knitter, the others are crocheter's, but we now have some beautiful patterns and I love Lionbrand Homespun.

We have approx. 15 people making shawls and one of our members taught a crochet class and 6 or 7 more people joined in. Even with that many making them we can hardly keep up with the demand in our own church. Some are for illness such as cancer, some are for deaths in the family, we are even making some baby shawl/blankets for a crisis pregnancy center to give at Christmas. We gave shawls to 2 ladies from the Philippines who have been with us for 3 years but now have to return home. We sent our prayers and love with them wrapped in a shawl.

We pray for those who will receive the shawls as we're making them and then we lay them on the altar on a Wednesday evening and our pastors over them and even anoint them with oil before they are given out. We have several wonderful retired ladies who will deliver them for us and pray with the recipients. It is truly a powerful ministry and witnessing tool.

We've had 2 awesome reports of distinct symptoms disappearing while they wrapped themselves in their shawls and prayed. We are so blessed in making these we can't hardly contain ourselves. Everyone is so appreciative of the shawls when they receive them. We had an anonymous donation of $500 to purchase yarn with as well as individual donations of yarn and money. Our church has approved the ministry and put us on the budget also. We are constantly working on a shawl in every bit of spare time we have.

This is our way of helping our brothers & sisters in Christ when they are going through a crisis when we really can't do anything else other than pray for them and give them a shawl to comfort them. We truly want them to feel the love of Jesus and our love as they wrap themselves in a shawl that was hand-made and prayed over just for them. We do this in Jesus Name and for His glory. We don't tell anyone who has made which shawl because we don't want any thanks, we want it all to go to the One Who deserves it. We do keep a journal of each shawl with a picture and some information as to who it was for, which yarn & pattern was used etc... I have never done anything so rewarding.
