'I wish you could have seen her face'
Created By: Deanne Moscrop
Hello. My name is Deanne. Purls from the Heart started three years ago when I quit my job to stay home with my two young boys. I started Purls from the Heart with my sister (she and I live in California) and my mother (who lives in Minnesota). We started out by giving prayer shawls to patrons of my sisters church and we now work with several hospitals and breast cancer support groups in California and Minnesota to make shawls for people in need (we have sent shawls all around the world). We also now have 10 - 15 volunteers that help us. It doesn't matter how many shawls we make - it is never enough as there are so many people who need their comfort.
We have received so many 'thank you's' from shawl recipients, but the one that moved me the most was from a family that we sent two shawls to - one for a young girl (Lexi) who is very sick (she received a Homespun Gothic colored shawl) and one for her mother (she received a Homespun Lavender colored shawl). Lexi's mom said that she and her daughter were so moved by our gift. She said 'I wish you could have seen her face, her eyes just lit up!'. Lexi's mom especially loved the lavendar shawl as lavendar had been her grandmother's favorite color and it made her feel close to her.
I spend 2 hours a day crocheting for the ministry and another hour or two per day on all the administrative stuff that goes along with it (managing volunteers, arranging shipment or dropoff of shawls, generating donations, etc.) This has become easier now that both of my boys are in school at least half a day! Between the Ministry and volunteering at the boys' school, I am busier than I was when I worked!
The best advice I have for others is to just follow your heart. It will lead you where you need to go. Trust me, once you get started, the people who need you have a way of finding you.
