Through Tragedy to Joy
Created By: Lynnette Dobberpuhl
I have had the privilege of making prayer shawls for my church's shawl outreach, and I agree that the shawls are blessings not only for the receiver, but for the crafter as well. When I am focused on the purpose of the work in my hands, I am filled with peace and love for the person who will receive it as I pray that healing and strength will accompany the shawl.
I have also had the opportunity to deliver a shawl (not one I personally had made) to a young mother of two who was on bedrest and about to delilver her third baby. I brought her the shawl and visited awhile. She shared her excitement and joy and was thankful for the shawl, anticipating its comfort on sleepless nights of feeding and caregiving ahead. Tragically, three days later we heard that she had suffered a miscarriage. Our grief for their family was lifted back into joy when, a year later, her family welcomed a new baby. At the baptism, the young mother told me that the shawl had brought her comfort in her times of grief, as well as in her times of hope and joy.
