Each month, we feature an
organization helping those in need with
yarncrafts. Our August charity feature highlights Guideposts Knit for
Kids. Started in 1996, this extension of the Guideposts organization
has donated over 480,000 hand-knit and crocheted sweaters to kids
across the U.S. and the world.
Knit for Kids asks knitters and crocheters to make sweaters
for
children's sizes 2 to 10 that are then collected and donated to
children across the U.S., as well as to countries from Guatemala to
South Africa to Russia (see all countries on their website). Patterns
for some basic sweaters are available on their website,
but any children's sweater pattern can be used (they ask that you avoid
using ties
or buttons for safety reasons). Any fiber can also be used. The
organization encourages you to add color or pattern to your sweater(s)
as the children seem to enjoy sweaters with interesting colors and
designs. Larger sizes are always welcome as they can be used to supply
a broader range of children. Knit for Kids states on its website,
"Smaller children will be able to grow into their sweaters and older
children are left out."
