The Mohair Route
Created By: Bonnie Tedrow
It was the eighth day of a ten day safari in the beautiful Karoo region of South Africa. We had just turned north onto the hardtop road after a 5 mile dirt road trip from our hosts' ranch.
As I looked out the Land Rover window, ever on alert for the magnificient animals of the region, I saw a sign that said "The Mohair Route". While I had seen many goats and sheep in our travels in the region, I never thought about the possibility of there being angora goats among them. Our host, Dirk, answered my question with the statement that he didn't raise them - "too much trouble", but said that they had been a large part of the local economy at one time.
About 10 miles north we stopped for gas at a building that stood alone for as far as the eye could see. It was a gas station, grocery, resturant, bar, post office and, to my delight, a shop selling locally grown and processed mohair! Needless to say, I added to my "stash"!
