My sister and her family were visiting us on...
Created By: Joanne B. Collier
My sister and her family were visiting us on Cape Cod where we have a summer cottage. She is an excellent knitter, and brought her knitting along for the long car ride from Michigan. She and I have never been particularly close, but one thing we have in common is our enjoyment of knitting.
When I saw what she was working on, I was wistful. I hadn't knit anything in ages. My husband and daughters and I had been going through some stressful events and I had been focusing my energies on the basics of life, I didn't have much energy for anything other than that.
My sister picked-up on my feelings and coaxed me into a nearby knitting shop. There, I choose a pattern for a one skein shawl made with pure wool.
We sat on the deck in the sunshine together and knitted for the rest of the day. Meanwhile, my husband and my brother-in-law wandered down to the lake for some fishing.
Sometime later, my daughters and my niece were wandering through the yard. They stood in one spot and took a photograph in every direction. One picture shows the guys gutting the fish they had caught and another shows my sister and I knitting. I am just finishing my shawl, which took approximately three hours to complete. I love those photographs for the moment in time they capture and the contast they display.
I wish I could say my sister and I have been close ever since, but it wouldn't be true. Things haven't really changed between us and are as they have always been. I have a wonderful memory however, and more importantly, I haven't stopped knitting. Knitting has helped ease my nerves. It has kept my mind from dwelling on stressful events and situations. It has helped me connect with new people and places during a long-distance relocation. In fact, it's been almost like having a supportive sister to help me through life and it's challenges.
