One Blanket Was the Begining
Created By: Dale Sereno
We had talked about starting a prayer shawl ministry for some time, but never got around to it! Last year, when my husband was in the hospital, we overheard the lady in the next room crying thru the night. I had taken a fleece throw prayer blanket to the hospital with me, that was crocheted around the edges, with a rose that I had embroderied on it. I told my husband that we should take this prayer blanket over to the lady, as I felt that maybe this would bring her some peace!
I went into the room, after knocking, and told the lady that we had heard her, and would she accept a prayer blanket to help her thru this time. She started crying when I asked if I could wrap this blanket around her, as it was God's love for her!
She held on to that blanket all day, and even came over to my husband's room to talk with us! She had been told that she had lung cancer, and would have a proceedure the next morning to tell the doctors what the next step of treatment would be. She asked for the hospital chaplin, and prayed with him. She called after the proceedure the next day and said that SHE DID NOT HAVE CANCER! We were overjoyed for her. We still see her, as she works at a local business.
After discussing this with some of my fellow church members, we decided that we needed to make more prayer blankets. We now have about 12 working in this ministry!
The fleece throws usually already have an over cast stitch on the edge, and we just use a G hook, and 3 or 4 ply yarn. Just do a single crochet around the edge first,in the overcast stitch and then do a shell stitch or loops or any other pretty stitches. These throws are inexpensive to purchase, and are quick to do! We also crochet and sew blankets, and make prayer pillows too! Prayers are said while making each item, and then they are blessed by our priest!
Anyone who uses their God given talents to make this type of items for people in need, can not imagine the love and joy that the makers feel in return! Start sewing, crocheting and or knitting ministies where ever you can! The rewards are great, for those in need, as well as the ones who make the goods! God Bless!
