I am coordinator for Second Congregational Church...
Created By: Roberta Ferguson
I am coordinator for Second Congregational Church Prayer Shawl Ministry. We started 3 years ago. We have given away close to 350 prayer shawls. I wanted to find a way to use my talents to serve God.
We started with 12 knitters and now we have over 36 knitters. Our congreation distributes the prayer shawls. We make it not only a ministry that the knitters participate in but every person in church who knows someone who needs to be reminded of God's love and our love we have toward one another. Our prayer shawl cards state this. We use a label that says made with love from the prayer shawl ministry of Second Congregational Church of Attleboro, MA. We have blanket racks in the front of the church with the prayer shawls, which hears the prayers of the people and then are free to be distributed to those in need. We have helped to start other prayer shawl ministries not only in our area but across the country. Some of the people who have received our shawls and lap robes have passed on. Some have left their shawls to someone in their families and some have been burried in their shawls.
This is a wonderful outreach ministry. It benefits the knitter the giver and the recipient. It truely passes on God's love to another.
I work 3 long days a week. I knit at least 3 to 4 2 hour stretches thoughout the rest of the week.
We meet twice per month. Once in the daytime and once in the evening.
My advise would be to include as many people as possible in this ministry. If people don't knit or crochet then have them put the finge on or place a few beads on the fringe to add a special touch. Have a teaching night once a week to allow people who want to learn to strengthen their skill. Have someone else print out the prayer shawl/lap robe cards and maintain the inventory. We also have someone who gathers items for a scrapbook and this comes in handy when we have a new member to show them what we are all about. Everyone can deliver prayer shawls/lap robes. We just have the giver record where the prayers are going and are needed. Then we have a reading and praying over the names at our monthly meeting.
