I recently purchased three baskets from...
Created By: Kathleen Cameron
I recently purchased three baskets from Macy's "Path to Peace" project that provides sustainable income for widows of the 1994 genocide in Rwanda. As I looked at the beautiful baskets in my home, I felt a connection with the women who made them. I was inspired to send them something I made, so I started knitting the lacy shawl pattern from the Lion Brand website.
Through email, I was able to contact UNIFEM, the branch of the United Nations that works with women in other countries. They gave me contact information for the program officer in Kigali, Rwanda, who told me that she could put me in touch with these widow basket weavers when I was ready to send something.
I am working on the the first shawl, and am in the process of organizing knitting groups to make "Shawls for Rwanda." Thanks to the Lion Brand website, and the beautiful Lion Brand New Cotton-Ease (Maize is my favorite!), we will send these lovely shawls to make a global connection in no time.
