Purls and Prayers
Created By: Debbie Miller
Our Prayer Shawl Ministry started a little over a year ago, March, 2007. It started with a yearning to learn to knit by my business partner, Caryn and myself. A friend from church, Joyce, an avid and amazing knitter, offered to come to our store and teach us. (We own a Christian Bookstore, Books On the Avenue, Wheeling, WV). We were hooked, so to speak, immediately. An artist friend of ours, Lenora, decided to join us and she brought us the book, "The Prayer Shawl Ministry". We decided to start a ministry and asked God to take it and do with it as He wanted. We named our group, Purls and Prayers and started by putting flyers on our our counter.
The common thread of knitting seemed to spark many conversations with customers and before long, people were showing up.
Our group meets Tuesday and Thursdays at 11 a.m. and Saturdays at 10 a.m. at our store. The ladies can come as often or as little as they want and stay as long as they want. We have found an amazing group of women. We come from different backgrounds, we all have different interests but we all love to knit and crochet.
We have given away a number of shawls, lap blankets and slippers. We have passed along quite a few shawls to customers who will sometimes share with us their concerns for a loved one or acquaintance. Each item leaves the store with a note to let the recipient know the item is a reminder that someone is praying for them.
We have grown to a group of about 10-12 women. We recently rented a cabin for a weekend and held a Knitter's Retreat. Everyone was responsible for a meal. We spent the entire weekend knitting and crocheting, learning new stitches and sharing our lives.
Caryn and I have been truly blessed by this ministry. We are able to come together as a group of women and share our sorrows and our joys. We encourage one another and rely on one another- and we laugh a lot. Thanks to Joyce, Lenora, Linda R., Susan, Terri, Pat, Linda L., Beth, Helen, Darcie, Bridget, Sue, Paula and any others who will join our group through the years. You have made this a ministry of love.
