God is stilll speaking
Created By: Betty-Lou Jones

In our church, the First Congregational Church (UCC) of Waterville, Maine, several women went to Vermont to a regional gathering. There we saw many women knitting prayer shawls, all different colors, different kinds of yarn and many patterns. An idea was beginning to form! Upon returning, our minister, Rev. Alice Anderman, suggested that we start one in our church. Announcements were put in the bulletin, in the newsletter, and we had a sign-up sheet in the narthex, for signatures after church. Eight people signed up - and our ministry was born!

We had a blessing ceremony during church the last of January. We had 15 shawls - very different in hue and texture - but all knitted with love. We draped them over the lectern and over the pulpit. On the altar we had one shawl that wasn’t finished, so the ball of yarn and knitting needles were put there, too. We draped the others across the railing to the chancel.

We are still busy. We have a log that every knitter signs, and a list is kept of who is given the shawls. They have been given to a young woman undergoing chemotherapy, a woman who was dying of cancer, a man who was hospitalized, and a man who was in physical therapy. Usually the ministers deliver them, but several members of the church have taken them to friends in need. We add a prayer on our church stationery, and put the shawl in a “gift” bag. We meet once a month to knit and fellowship. We have added two new members, so now have ten knitters!

In the UCC, we believe that “God is still speaking”, and part of that “speaking” was to us who began this ministry.
