Before I made my first prayer shawl, I thought,...
Created By: Debbie Calderone

Before I made my first prayer shawl, I thought, what a beautiful idea! So I got started. My first shawl was intended for an elderly lady in our congregation. I worked on this shawl while helping my sister take care of our Dad while he was home on hospice. After I finished the shawl, I just couldn't give it to the intended person. I now know why. Shortly after I finished, someone from our congregation was severly injured from a fall from a horse. Michael is dearly loved in our community. We had a prayer vigil for him, draping my first prayer shawl at the kneeling rail. Everyone who came into the church, prayed, touching this prayer shawl. My pastor and I then took it to Michael in the hospital. He cried. We cried. He still uses it to this day.

My second shawl was for a dear friend who had cancer. I took it to her and she loved it. After I got home she called me and told me that she could feel the love and warmth in the shawl. She passed away shortly after that.

Our church now has 6 ladies working on prayer shawls. We attach a folded card with a drawing of our church on the front and inside it says: As I created this shawl, I prayed for you. May it wrap you with the love and comfort of our Heavenly Father, his son Jesus Christ our Lord and Savior and the congregation of our church.

My third shawl was for the lady for whom I started this.

I have a new pastor and she is amazed at what these shawls do. I haven't kept track of how many we have given out. It doesn't matter.

I still think it is one of the most beautiful ideas ever. It has also helped me with my prayers.
