Prayerful Stitches Ministry Team

Our core group consists of 15 women who meet regularly. Each month, we have a choice of a morning or an evening gathering … or both!. Either session includes 2 hours of fellowship in someone’s home. We also receive shawls from other members of our church who choose not to attend the ‘meetings’.

At each gathering we open with a reading, and then have a check in time, during which we share our joys, concerns, and basically update our lives with the others. Many times we will add a focus question to the sharing, such as: “Where and when did you learn to knit?”, or “Name one thing that made you really happy this month.” We also discuss who is in need of a prayer shawl, and decide who will deliver it. During this time, we are knitting away! With a candle always burning in the middle of the room, it is a lovely time of fellowship. We spend the last half hour in silence and prayer, listening to soft Christian music. We close standing in a circle, holding hands. Each person says a personal prayer, and then squeezes the hand of the next person, indicating it is their turn. Together we recite the Lord’s Prayer, all holding the book that lists all those who have received a prayer shawl from our ministry team (along with their thank you notes) over the years. The attached photo shows our beautiful book and our working hands.

We have given out more than 200 prayer shawls! Though our inventory many times gets dangerously low, we have never been asked for a shawl when we have not had one available to give.

The following is our Mission Statement …

‘The Prayerful Stitches Ministry Team is a group of women and/or men gathered together in prayer and fellowship to create a mantle of peace, wisdom and prayer. For those who are broken in body or spirit … for those who are doctors, nurses, technicians, chaplains and all who care for the sick … for those who are celebrating a special gift from God … we pray for God’s gentle, yet strong touch to reach out to heal the broken and hurting people and places in our world.’

We consider our group to be one of the most important Ministry Teams in our church. The 15 of us are very committed, and never miss a meeting unless we are traveling. We all love your yarn, and have found new ways of using it. Some of us use several colors for one shawl, or add another kind of yarn to set off your beautiful yarns. Please keep coming up with new colors! That is what keeps us knitting with interest.

We are very excited about a new endeavor we are about to embark upon. One woman on our team had the brilliant idea of going to tell our youth group about the prayer shawl ministry, and will encourage them to knit prayer ‘scarves’ for their friends or family who may be in need of comfort. We will even offer knitting lessons to those who do not presently know how to knit. We hope that it will be a new ministry that could be very powerful for the youth in our church.

We look forward to your new book with great interest, and hope to glean from it some new ideas for our group!

Sincerely,

The Prayer Shawl Ministry Team, United Church of Christ, Norwell, MA
