Spreading Our Love Around
Created By: Kecia Stanley
Our prayer shawl group started about 3 years ago when some of our church members were going to Biloxi Mississippi to help after Katrina. A group of women decided to make prayer shawls to send down. When they were displayed during a Sunday service I was so touched that I asked about joining the group. I had no idea how to knit but I was warmly welcomed into the group and taught how to knit.
We have since branched out to help more people in other ways. In October 2007 we sent 127 bears to the Mother Bear Project in Minneapolis, MN. The organization gives comfort and hope to children affected by HIV/AIDS by giving them a gift of love in the form of hand-knitted and crocheted bears.
Then we moved onto making hats, mittens and scarves for local foster children.
Currently we have been working on several projects. This year we made dish cloths, pot holders and place mats for another trip to Biloxi. We also made lap blankets and chemo caps for our local hospital. We also will now be supplying our local hospital with comfort pillows for mastectomy patients.
We are still making prayer shawls and some are now going to an organization, Prayer Shawls 4 Fallen Soldiers, that gives a shawl to a wife or mother that has lost a loved on in the war.
Our Tuesday night gatherings are never dull. So many hands making so many wonderful things. I am so proud to be a part of this extrodinary group we now call "Stitches of Love"
