Loving Embrace
Created By: Carrie Scalzo
Three years ago, I was struggling through the nightmare of infertility. I so badly wanted a child. My husband and I were committed to building our family. But, the fertility treatments and emotional roller-coaster were really taking its toll on me.
A good friend of mine sent me a prayer shawl. It was the most beautiful purple I have ever seen and it was lovingly knitted just for me.
The shawl arrived during a heat wave in June, but I immediately wrapped myself up and felt as if I was being lovingly embraced. A sense of calm came over me.
I later found out I was pregnant with twin boys. My husband and I were over joyed!! My pregnancy was "eventful." I started pre-term labor at 22 weeks and had to be put on hospital bedrest unitl my boys were born at 32 weeks.
My prayer shawl helped keep me sane. I slept with it wrapped around me and i wore it for every exam and ultrasound.
While still pregnant the doctors found that one of my sons had a neural tube defect and may be born with complications. I was so scared. But, my shawl enveloped me and calmness surrounded me.
My sons were born small, but healthy. Our son who had dealt with a birth defect still has challenges, but he always rises above them, he is a fighter and is doing very well.
In the confusion following my emergency c-section and dealing with issues that arose in the NICU, my prayer shawl was misplaced. I had everyone at the hospital searching for it to no avail. I deeply miss it.
I will always be grateful to my friend for giving me such a loving gift of the prayer shawl. It got me through a very difficult time. Wherever my shawl ended up, I hope it is lovingly embracing someone who may need it!
