a simple gift can save a life

When I was in the hospital for eleven days, I eventually began to get seriously bored. I asked one of the nurses if they had any description of scrap yarn and needles on hand. She brought me several skeins of various blues and purples, and I began to knit.
Well, that was in october, and by december the shawl was finished. I emailed the person to whom it would go, who was suicidal and planning to end her life by Christmas, and got her address. I boxed up the shawl with a nice letter I'd written. A week later I got this email:
JT, That shawl is beautiful! and so soft! I'm going to keep it close to me all the time.
Yes, I cried. Through such a simple gift a woman was able to pull herself out of a depression and begin to eat again.
