The prayer shaw ministery at First Presbyterian...
Created By: Joan Steven

The prayer shaw ministery at First Presbyterian Church, Charleston WV began 4 years ago as a lenten program. After lent the members wanted to continue knitting and now we meet once a month. The need for shaws and lap robes is so great we have changed to knitting squares 12 by 12 inches. We now have a square supply in our closet. If you know of someone that needs an item, you can choose the number of squares you want and sew them together. The squares are blessed after they are made so the item can be delivered immediately or blessed again at our next meeting.

During advent a nap blanket was ready for a man undergoing chemotherapy. During "the moment for children" at the Sunday service, the children were told about knitting and the idea of praying for a person as the item was knitted. The children felt the squares and then each child held onto an edge of the blanket and we prayed for the man. With the children still holding onto the blanket we slowly walked to where he was seated and gave it to him. The presentation was so moving that a few tears were shed.

We now give out knitting kits of yarn(Homespun) in various colors, needles and instructions to people unable to come to the group. They return a square when it is completed to the church office. They are not able to participate in the devotion or blessing, but they do feel that they are a part of this wonderful service. Now all squares are square or 12 inches on a side, but they fit together someway and can be used.

I have photos but not the ability to send them. I can have someone else send them if you are interested.
