Surrounding Parishioners with Love
Created By: Annette Moulton

Our Prayer Shawl Ministry at St Stephens Church in Sewickley,Pa began in January 2005.I learned about it from a woman who belonged to a group on Cape Cod and from reading the book Knitting into the Mystery. I immediately took the idea to our pastoral care leader who also fell in love with idea of adding a new demension of caring for our parishioners. Our prayer shawls symbolize God's loving hands around each individual who recieves one. Our team of less that 10 have knit over 200 shawls in a little over three years. We knit at home and meet monthly to pray as a group over each shawl. The names are suggested by our Pastoral Care Leader. We have given shawls for birthday celebrations; for comfort and healing; for those who grieve and/or have serious personal problems; and for recognition of service to our church. This year we have begun knitting baby blankets as a special blessing to the new church babies. In addition, we have sent many on mission trips to Haiti and Uganda;given one to a miner's widow from the Slago mine tragedy in West Virgina and to victims of Hurricane Katrina. The recipients are overwhelmed by these shawls..."When I put it over my shoulders, there is no doubt the Lord is holding me in his arms." This is an easy ministry to begin and the value in blessings to those who knit and those who receive the shawl is incredible. .everyone is blessed by this wonderful ministry.
