St. Peter's Prayer Shawl Ministry
Created By: Mary A Paulson
Our Prayer Shawl Ministry began in January 2005. I put notices of the new Ministry in both our Church bulletin and newsletter. It soon became very apparent with the great response that we would enough members to have two groups, one that met during the day and one that met at night. The first meeting took place on a Monday evening with 15 eager ladies ready to go with their knitting needles, crotchet hooks and yarn in hand as they arrived.
This January I am proud to say our group has grown to 30 members. We currently meet twice a month. Some of the members come all the time while others do their shawl ministry at home and bring their completed shawls to one of the meetings. All of our meetings begin with a prayer and end with the shawls being blessed. Our group has created new bonds within the Ministry and has created friendships with other members of our Parish as our shawls have brought peace and comfort to those in need.
Our shawls have been given to just about anyone in any stage of live whether they are young, old, ill, lonely, grieving or just on a new life journey. We are proud to say our shawls have even been sent to a couple of our Parish Members that are stationed in Iraq. The youth of our Parish have taken dozens on their mission trips and were given to the people they helped. Many tears of comfort and joy have been shed at the thoughtfulness put into the making and giving of the Shawls. We have taken them to Hospice Centers, local hospitals and Oncology Units. They have also been shared with moms who are bedridden during a pregnancy, have an ill infant and in very sad cases have lost their new born. Most of the shawls have been given to our own Parish Members and friends.
It is difficult to say how many shawls our Ministry has made in the past 3 years. Many of our shawls that are made at home never reach one of the meetings as they are given directly to a friend of someone in the Ministry who would benefit from the shawl.
Along with starting a Prayer Shawl Ministry in my own church I have been able to help other Parishes start their own. The easiest thing to do if someone wants to start a Prayer Shawl Ministry is to put a notice in their Church bulletin or newsletter. To get ideas and patterns they can Google Prayer Shawl Ministry and of course go to the Lion Brand Website.
I am very proud to be a member of the Prayer Shawl Ministry and to share my story as the group is very rewarding for both those that create the Shawls and for those that are the receivers of the Shawls.
