Make a difference for someone
Created By: Bonnie Tyo
At Christmastime, when my brother, Keith, was critically ill and semi-conscious, his pastor brought him a prayer shawl. She wrapped it around him and prayed for him and left. It was a life and death scenario. An extremely risky procedure was decided upon by his family and undertaken successfully the following day. His multiple problems and symptoms did begin to improve.
The next day when he was a bit more coherent and fingering the yarn, it was explained to him that people at his church knit prayers into these wonderfully soft, cozy shawls as they make them. After they are completed, they are blessed at church with the prayers of the entire congregation. Then they are prayed over once more by the giver when they are given to a person who is very ill or depressed or scared or in need of support in any way. Sometimes they are given in celebration or gratitude as well.
Keith is one of those avid outdoorsmen who lives for hunting and fishing and is not usually given to expressing his feelings. Now, he tells everyone who will listen how warm, cared for and truly blessed he felt and still feels when he is wrapped in his prayer shawl. His medical problems are far from over, but his prayer shawl helps him feel the prayers of his supporters as he faces the oncoming challenges.
