Establishing the Work of Our Hands
Created By: Carson Paula
As a result of a Prayer Shawl Ministry that I joined at Cape Coral Alliance Church in Cape Coral, FL during the winter of 2006 I felt compelled to bring this ministry back to our church in Auburn Township, OH. In June of 2007 HIS Handiwork Prayer Shawl Ministry of the Friendship Alliance Church began with 13 women and one 10 year old young lady. Two of our women were accomplished knitters, 3 were somewhere between beginner and intermediate and the rest were new to this wonderful craft. Our motto became Psalm 90:16-17. We do not look for praise from anyone but continue to strive for perfection in the work of our hands and an awareness of those in need. We pay for our own materials using 3 skeins of Lion Brand HomeSpun Yarn for each shawl and pray for the recipients as we knit. We now have upwards of 23 knitters meeting every other Thursday evening at our church with an average of 8 in attendance. Many of our group with small children continue this ministry at home. When a shawl is completed the ladies lay hands on the shawl and pray for the recipient and then on the first Sunday of each month all the completed shawls are brought to church for blessing by the congregation with the following prayer patterned after the prayer used at Cape Coral Alliance Church: "May God's grace be upon this shawl..warming, comforting, enfolding and embracing. May it represent God's safe haven, a sacred place of security and well-being, sustaining and embracing in good times as well as difficult ones. May the one who receives this shawl be cradled in hope, kept in joy, graced with peace and wrapped in love.". By December 11th we had completed over 98 shawls as well as quite a few scarves. We continually receive letters and notes from thankful recipients who have been blessed beyond words by this outpouring of love. Our shawls have traveled all the way to Germany as well as south of the equator. We estimate an average of 25 hours to complete one shawl. The prayer shawl ministry is an act of worship and blesses both the giver and the recipient. God has given us the gift of our hands as instruments of His love and an extension of His mercy and grace. We count it a blessing to be a part of this vital ministry to which we have been called and encourage others to prayerfully consider this rewarding ministry.
