Project With Meaning
Created By: Tina Dettbarn

In April 2007 I was wandering around the yarn section of an arts and crafts store trying to figure out what to make. I couldn't figure what I wanted to do and was about to give up. As I was walking out of the aisle I spotted the Prayer Shawl book by Lions Brand. I picked it up and knew what I was supposed to do. I had never used Lions Brand yarn before and immediately fell in love with the Homespun variety. I didn't know who I was going to make the shawl for but prayed for guidance as I started it. I was into the fourth row when I got a call that my friend's mother was terminally ill. That is who I made the shawl for. It has since been passed to my friend as her mother passed away. I was told she was wearing the shawl as she passed.

I crochet on the way to and from work, on vacations and in the evening while watching T.V. I work full time and if I could get away with crocheting there I would! I pray for the person I am making the shawl for while I crochet. I also have the shawl blessed by my priest when it is completed.

Since my first shawl I have made thirteen more for several different people and different occasions such as birthdays, illness, death of a loved one, just because, and my last one was made in for the woman who taught me to crochet in 1981. I thought it would be a fitting gift to the one who taught me this wonderful gift of crocheting.

I am honestly "hooked on making these prayer shawls and I don't see and end in sight!
