Grace Prayer Shawl Ministry, Jefferson City, MO
Created By: Paula Bone
Our ministry began in January, 2005, with 12 avid members. We began with offering shawls to our congregation who were ill, or were in nursing homes. The ministry grew in a short time to include lap blankets for men, baby blankets for births and baptisms, shawls and lap blankets for our military members and their families, and shawls for high school and college graduates. We soon opened up the ministry to include anyone, inside or outside our church, who was in need. We have given extra shawls to community outreach programs, and recently started making scarves out of our leftover yarn to give to a cancer ward in a nearby city. Our membership has grown to 20 members, and our garments have been sent world-wide.
At the present time, we have given away over 550 garments. The feedback from the recipients bring us to tears; the major theme of the thank you notes is "the love and caring you show" and how the shawls/blankets have provided so much comfort and healing.
We bless the shawls on the 2nd Sunday of each month, in our chapel. We also bless shawls at the mid-week Eucharist service as the need arises, or the pile of shawls and blankets grows too high!! Some members meet weekly to knit, crochet, and share patterns and stories. We have quarterly retreats for all members to come and enjoy the strong bonds we have developed.
The best part of this ministry is in knowing that by doing what we love to do (knit and crochet), we are touching so many lives in many different ways, and we would urge any group, large or small, to begin this wonderful ministry.
Our unofficial motto is "We'll continue this ministry until our fingers are worn down to little nubs."
