Presby Prayer Shawls
Created By: Roberta Lightner

I would like to tell you how this all started at our Church.

In my crochet magazines I saw the story of the Prayer Shawl, and I thought what a neat idea. But I did not do anything about it. Then a friend, Sara Jane knowing I crochet all the time) gave me a page out of the Patriot News. It was an article about the Prayer Shawl Ministry at the Derry Presbyterian church in Hershey. I read the article and put it aside, thinking what a “neat idea” but still did nothing about it. A few weeks later, one night while lying in bed, I had this idea (I am sure it was God telling me) to start a Prayer Shawl ministry in our church. I could hardly wait, the first thing in the morning I went on line, to the Shawl Ministry web site, I then went to the local craft store and bought the Prayer Shawl book by Lion brand and yarn to make my first shaw. I made that shawl and took it to share my idea with Pastor Kris. She was as excited about it as I was. As I started to crochet that shawl, I knew I wanted it to be our first “Prayer Shawl” and I wanted it to be for Dottie Wolford. my very good friend of many years, who at the time was a resident of a nursing home. As I worked on the shawl I prayed just for her.

Our Prayer Shawl Ministry at Duncannon Presbyterian church is growing, we have 18 members. Not all the ladies make a shawl every month, but all have made shawls----throughout the year.

Each lady works at her own pace, some have made one, some over 100. To date we have made, blessed and delivered 879 Prayer Shawls, or Prayer Blankets, Scarves, Stoles, Baby Blankets, Poncho's, and Travel Prayer Blankets.

Some of the ladies are not from our church, our Prayer Shawl Ministry is open to the community everyone is welcome. From our Ministry 2 ladies have gone on to start one in their church, in other communities.

We have made shawls for people who were ill, people in need of comfort, for new babies; some for gifts, graduation, birthday, or just ministering to others; there are endless possibilities! And God keeps right on giving us the names. It is amazing.

I also like making them just because---you know for what ever reason,

We made for every resident of Stonebridge Nurisng Home, for Perry Village Nursing Home, for the residents of Susquehanna Apts (senior living)and have just started making for the residents of Bethan Village (assisted living). One of our ladies made 24 Prayer scarves and delivered them to Veterans in the hospita. Many have gone to other states. And some to people in other countries, including Thailand, Australia, Canada & Russia.

We recently made a Prayer Shawl for healing for a lady with cancer, and placed it over her shoulders while Pastor Kris annointed her with oil and we laid hands on her in prayer. Her tumors are shrinking at this time. "Thank the Lord, for our Wonderful Prayer Shawl Ministry" Like I tell everyone, the shawls are not magic, but if you believe and put your faith in God, and place that shawl over your shoulders, you will feel it's power.

Often someone will ask to purchase a shawl.

Putting a price on a shawl defeats the purpose of this ministry. We never charge for a shawl. You cannot buy one. But

If you ever want one for yourself or to give to someone, just let us know we will get it made for you as quickly as we can.

Just last month I watched Robin Roberts on Good Morning America, she was having her last cemo treatment, God just spoke to me, and I knew I would make her a Prayer Shawl. I went to my yarn cabinet and way in the back was beautiful pink yarn, I had it for quite some time, God saved that yarn for Robins Shawl.

We meet the second Monday of each month, at 9:30, everyone is invited We teach anyone who would like to learn to crochet or knit.

Each month usually the last Sunday we have a Prayer Shawl blessing service. All the shawls are displayed in front of the church and the Shawl Makers all come forward for the blessing, if anyone is present who is receiving a shawl that person comes forward and the shawl is placed over their shoulders. The rest are delivered by our Shawl Makers.

If someone does not want to crochet, but would like to be part of the ministry, we invite them to come and join us for the fellowship. They might also put tags on the shawls, help get them in the church for the blessing, make tags, or help to deliver them to the nursing homes, or create our scrapbook.(we have received many nice letters and thank you cards) there are a lot of things to do besides crochet.

The best advise I can give is "do it" you will be the most blessed. When you are involved in this ministry you can make so many people happy and truly blessed. I cannot tell you how many people are just so thrilled, amazed and blessed. The stories we have from people who have received shawls is just amazing. It is the best thing I have ever done.

Wish I could write down all that I have experienced since starting this ministry.

We started in August of 2006 and we have made to date 879. We will be at 1000 probably before August 2008.
