Warm, fuzzy feelings about crocheting and knitting
Created By: Betty Johnson
When I was 8 years old my mother taught me to crochet. When I was 10, she taught me to knit. I also embroidered, rather my brother and I embroidered. We used to sit in the living room in the evenings listening to the radio and either knitting, crocheting, or embroidering. My oldest sister married and had a baby so my mother made him a sweater set. Since I was at my mother's side learning what she was doing, I made the same for my doll. I even sewed it together. My mother was a great teacher of her craft. Even though she was born in Italy; she came to America when she was 18 years old and learned how to read and write English very well. Our neighbor ladies used to come to her whenever they were stuck on a pattern they couldn't understand. She would expertly help them with their problem. I was always so proud of her. I am 71 years old and am constantly knitting or crocheting. As my mother did before me, I have to have a project going or I feel like I am wasting my time just sitting as I'm watching television. I don't really watch the program, I listen as I crochet or knit. This past Christmas, I made eight Christmas stockings for my children and grandchildren, five of which were for my son and his family who lost their entire home and possessions to fire last February 25. I made those stockings with so much love because they had to replace the ones I made for them previously. I even asked them what colors they would like. My little grandsons chose Green Bay Packer colors since they are avid fans. They looked beautiful hanging from the new fireplace mantle.
