Suprised to be a Recipient!
Created By: Jane Gegel

I joined the ministry of our prayer shawl group (Circle of Joy) when it was started at our church (New Joy Lutheran in Westfield, Indiana). We meet on Monday evenings at the home of one of our members because we are just in the process of constructing our first church building. Neva and Amy had the idea to start the ministry and Neva has hosted almost every night of knitting. Sometimes she is not even in town but her home is open to us! We welcome seasoned stitchers and new ones. We are happy to teach new members how to knit. It's been fun to watch new people get excited and start other projects, too.

We've knitted for persons near and far. We sent a group of Prayer Shawls along with our Mission Team to New Orleans last year and are busy making more to send with them this March.

When I started attending the group I never thought I would be the recepient of a shawl. But in February 2007 I was diagnosed with Breast Cancer. The following Sunday during our worship service the Circle of Joy members surrounded me in prayer, held onto the prayer shawl and prayed for my healing and for the wisdom, knowledge and care of my health professionals. And then they presented my husband and two adult children with a prayer shawl also. It was a beautiful expression of love and kindness. We have wrapped ourselves in those shawls many times during the past year. It provides such comfort and is a reminder of God's love and the love of our New Joy family. (I've included pictures of each of us with our New Joy prayer shawls.)

I would encourage others to start like our Circle of Joy did. Pick an evening to get together, invite anyone who is interested to attend. Buy some yarn and large needles to have for those just wanting to learn. Pray, talk, laugh, cry with each other as you knit and share stories. You'll be knitting prayer shawls and beautful relationships, too.
