I have always loved to knit. I find it relaxing...
Created By: Barbara Morehouse
I have always loved to knit. I find it relaxing as well as rewarding. A person from the church I attend happened to mention a ministry they had heard about called a prayer shawl ministry so I went on the Internet and did some research. I then approached one of the ministers at our church about this as I suddently felt drawn to this ministry. This was during the spring of 2005, and by word of mouth and through advertising in our church bulletin this ministry began at Memorial Drive United Methodist Church in Houston, TX. We now have a group of around 25 people that are actively involved in the making of prayer shawls. The great thing about this ministry is that it can be done anywhere - either during one of our two monthly meetings held at the church, or wherever the creator happens to be - the airport, doctor's office or in their own homes.
We begin our meetings with a prayer. We lift up those that we are aware of that are in need of prayer. At the end of our time together we dedicate any completed shawls. We have members that have knitting and crocheting experience as well as those that come to learn. Each prayer shawl then has a label sewn into it that says, "Prayerfully created for you by the Prayer Shawl Ministry at MDUMC."
These shawls are made with prayers and are meant to bring comfort to the wearer and an awareness of God's presence in our daily lives. They have been given to expectant parents, those in hospitals, brides, people coping with the loss of a loved one, people that our mission teams come in contact with -anyone that needs a physical reminder of God's love and care.
Since this ministry was started at our church, almost three years ago, we have created and given out approximately 800 shawls! These shawls are not only treasured by the receiver, the creator's lives are also affected. As one recipient who is also a member of this ministry writes, "It's so difficult to find words to express how overwhelmed and touched I am by my prayer shawl. How ironic that you were knitting your prayer-filled stitches when I was going through a difficult time. What an enlightening and humbling experience to be on the receiving end of the Prayer Shawl Ministry. When I wrap it around my shoulders I truly feel peace and calm. Now I know what others have spoken about."
This ministry is alive and well in Houston, TX!
