I created a prayer shawl for my step-mother in...
Created By: Stephenie Del Rio Serna

I created a prayer shawl for my step-mother in law. She and I hadn't been on the best of terms due to our language boundaries. She soley speaks spanish and I can barely throw a sentence together in spanish. Because of our cultural differences it was incredibly difficult for us to understand each other and for a very long time she felt as though I didn't like her. God, called to me when I began to crochet again and He decided my first project was going to be a prayer shawl for her. She suffers severe pains and migranes. I crocheted my heart out desperately trying to put "love" and "healing" thoughts into the shawl. If I became frustrated or angry I would put it down- I felt any negativity would be lingering in the shawl and that was the last thing we needed. When the day came that it was completed and ready to meet it's owner I was nervous, I didn't want to give it to her because I was afriad she wouldn't understand and I am very shy at times. My father in law insisted. After handing it to her she asked "why?" and as if it were silk slipping quickly out of my mouth "because I love you." She understood and I was shocked at my words but they were true. She hugged me and kissed my cheek with tears in her eyes. My father in law explained that it was for her to wear while praying in hopes to help provide healing. My father in law was shocked too. I remember his reply if I asked if that would help, he said, "You not only broke the ice you crumbled the wall into pieces." We must love every one we meet with unconditional love just as Jesus did. On occation I ask her if she uses it and always with a smile she replies "yes." My prayer shawl was crocheted with homespun in sierra.
