Father James Martin, S.J. 105 years old!
Created By: Carolynn Moritz
My prayer shawl ministry began last summer '07 at a Bigfork, Mt meeting of Weight Watchers! I was suprised to see Joann knitting with a beautiful green yarn. When I commented on the georgeous, unusual yarn, she told me it was a Prayer Shawl. Joann is a Mennonite and I am a Catholic Christian woman. She invited me to her home. We had mint tea and knit together as she explained the minisrty to me. I have made several shawls by now. Joann also shared her beautiful book," Knitting into the Mystery". She taught me how to keep a photo album with Homespun yarn samples, photos and her prayers for the happy recipient, including their thank you notes.
One of my shawls was to my long time family friend and priest, Father James Martin, S.J. He lived at Georgetown Jesuit Residence. I called my dear friend, Charlotte Daniels, and arranged for her to take his photo sporting his Homespun Windsor Blue Prayer Shawl. She did. Then she sent a note and photo right away. He was so handsome in his washable prayer shawl. It matched his beautiful blue, radient eyes so well. He was uplifted. I am sure he said many prayers for me because of the gift! I DID benifit greatly by those prayers. Our dear Father James Martin, S.J. passed away in October after his 105th birthday , August 30th. I was so happy that he had been able to enjoy his prayer shawl for his 105th birthday. Praise God!
I try to knit daily, it helps my prayer life and reduces stress. I love to pray for the person I am creating for. Currently I am using Homespun Montana Sky to make one for my beloved daugher for Mother's Day 2008. She will be suprised. Her sister received hers, Homespun Harvest, for Christmas 2007.
My advice for beginning a ministry is to knit in public. Everyone is curious and sharing the minisrty with them is a great oportunity to inspire them to join you for tea and an afternoon of knitting. The Homespun colored yarns are irresistable and knitting lovingly for others good medicine and healing for the knitter too.
Encourage each other daily while it is still today. Hebrews 3, 13.
Cas Moritz, Bigfork Montana
