Knit One, Pray Too
Created By: C Carol
My passion has always been knitting, and since I was a nurse, caring for people has always been important in my life as well. I have been a Christian since I was conceived ;)
Put these all together, AND I developed Knit One, Pray Too as a small ministry in our congregation.
We began 4 years ago and have had as many as 14 members at one time, including a husband of one of the ladies. We've knitted over 200 scarves.
I began by asking people if they wanted to learn how to knit, and could they come to my home once a week, in the evening. We thought scarves might be less daunting than a shawl, and yet it could convey the same message.
God cared enough to send His son to die for us and promises us an eternal life in heaven. He loved first, and we are giving our love to people who are going through a "life change" in some way. We have given scarves to people who have had surgery, are undergoing chemo, maybe they've lost a family member. We've also presented scarves to 3 little boys whose dad was serving in Iraq. We've given scarves to our pastors who serve us, to our high school students going on to college. Of course, those scarves were made in their new school colors :)
Each scarf has a label attached that says "Made With Love by Knit One, Pray Too". We also attach a ceramic bead that has either an angel, a cross, a heart, or some other symbol that will remind them that God loves them and so do we.
It's our hope that the warmth they feel from the scarf reminds them our God's love and our love.
One lady, Bessie, received her husband's scarf the DAY AFTER HE DIED. He was to get it on Sunday morning, but died the evening before. Bessie and her family came to church and we gave her the scarf. Bessie still sleeps with that scarf every night!
We spend 3 hours at my home once a week, and of course we knit in between those Wednesdays. We have a strong prayer support during the knitting, and we always say a prayer of blessing over the scaarves before giving them out in a Chapel service.
It's been a blessing to the knitters probably more than the recipients. We've grown in our prayerlife and in our caring for others.
We also keep a scrapbook where we put photos of the presentations, and we keep thank you notes that people have sent to us.
It's been AWESOME for all involved.
I have a packet of information that I would be happy to send to anyone who would like it. It includes PR pages, Bible verses for recipients to call upon, and an explanation of what is involved in our ministry.
