St. Matthews By-The-Sea Prayer Shawl Ministry
Created By: Marie Rowe

In January of 2006, St. Matthews By-The-Sea United Methodist Church in Fenwick Island, DE added a prayer shawl ministry to its list of ministries. Several knitters and crocheters jumped on the opportunity to turn a leisurely pasttime into something meaningful and useful to others. As of our last meeting in January 2008, we had created 139 prayer shawls and lap robes. I not only knit shawls and lap robes for the church, I keep the prayer shawl journals for the group. I am currently working on the 3rd journal, because we can fill up a binder every year. We live in a resort area where a lot of the members have migrated from various places, thus our work has been shipped to those in need outside of our area, as well as hand-delivered to so many others here. The thank-you notes we get back are well worth the time and effort put into every shawl.

We meet 6 times a year (every other month) at the church. We bring our knitting and enjoy fellowship with our fellow knitters. We work on our current projects and share patterns, tips, and advice. We bless a stack of shawls at every meeting (the ones that have been turned in since the last meeting).

Since the inception of this ministry at St. Matthews By-The-Sea, we have touched so many lives - not only the recipients of our work, but all the other people that see the gifts from our needles. Our work is for the sick, the downhearted, the grievers, and for anybody who needs a little tangible comfort from God.
