It all began with one shawl....
Created By: Cathy Schneider
When I found out that my mother's Minister was undergoing surgery for colon cancer, I knew just what to do - make a healing prayer shawl! My husband picked out Lion's Brand Colonial Homespun and my knitting needles were soon clicking away. As I would knit, I found myself sometimes softly singing "Father, Son and Holy Ghost...Father, Son and Holy Ghost" as I would knit three, purl three.
When I finished the prayer shawl, I dropped it off at my Mother's house and she took it with her to the next Women's Circle Meeting at her Church. Each member put her hand on the shawl as everyone took turns saying a prayer for the speedy recovery of their minister. My Mom delivered the shawl to her minister and he was so overwhelmed by the beauty and the symbolic meaning of the Prayer Shawl. To this day, he keeps it in his study draped over a chair. It's been wrapped around many members of the church who come to his office for guidance, direction and comfort.
Mom's Circle Group asked for the directions for the Prayer Shawl. I supplied them with the directions and a few skeins of Lion's Brand Homespun. They meet once a week and knit. The first recipient of their Prayer Shawl was to a member of the congregation living in a retirement home. She sheepishly looked up at the deliverer of such a beautiful shawl and said "I didn't think anyone at the Church remembered me anymore. I am so touched."
Needless to say, many more Prayer Shawls have been made by the Women's Circle Group. And, these women shared their stories with another church in Charlotte, NC. So, there is another church making the Prayer Shawls for their congregants, friends and family members!
I can't help but feel blessed to know that the one Prayer Shawl I knitted for the Minister of my Mom's church has mushroomed into a beautiful ministry for many women in my community. We have all been blessed by the Prayer Shawl Ministry.
