Des Moines Church Prayer Shawl Ministry
Created By: Linda Amis
In July of 2005 Miller UM Church, in Des Moines, Iowa, started a prayer shawl ministry, which was brought from another church by Linda Amis. Her initial ministry was to provide each member of the church with a prayer shawl and whoever else might need one. Linda works at Orchard Place a facility for youth with medical & mental health issues. She felt a calling to provide each youth there with a prayer shawl also. The call went out for prayer shawls, which came from churches all over Iowa, to provide 103 prayer shawls for the youth. Each youth at Orchard Place was able to choose one for themselves for Christmas that year [see photos].
Since July of 2005 Miller church, a 65 member church, with the help of many knitters and crocheters, have provided over 400 prayer shawls to people who have needed them. Many of those prayer shawls were made with Lion Brand Yarn. Many people have received healing and comfort from these prayer shawls, as one recipient said, "WOW, it is so soft and gives me such a feeling of comfort." A church does not have to be a large church to be able to build a prayer shawl ministry - one person can start it and make a difference in people's lives.
