Created By: Anne R. Fitzgerald
I was working the election poll, held in a neighborhood Lutheran church. On my way to the bathroom I passed through the church library, where I spotted a basket of yarn. I'm a crocheter, and I had been getting bored during the long stretches between voter rushes, so I asked if anyone knew about the yarn. I was told it was part of the church's Prayer Shawl Ministry. I asked if there was a spare crochet hook and might I participate.
So I set to work. A few days later I dropped off a blue shawl at the church office. I learned later that it was given to a woman who had recently lost her husband - she was so touched to receive the shawl that she teared up.
So, even though I'm not Lutheran, I joined the Ministry group which meets once a month. We have turned out a pile of shawls, all prayed over during the making and then blessed by the group. How rewarding it is to gather to do handwork with a group of women, an archetypal women's activity which has been lost in the rush of our modern lives! And how blessed it is to make something for a stranger who needs to be wrapped in comfort and prayer!
