TPC Prayer Shawl Ministry
Created By: Paula LeCates
Temberridge Presbyterian Church in McDonough, Georgia started their Prayer Shawl Ministry in March 2007. Research was done using the resources of www.shawlministry.com and www.lionbrand.com/prayerShawl.com.
A presentation was made to the Outreach Ministry Committee who gave their full support. A brochure was developed and a presentation made to the congregation. Initially thirty four people signed up to participate (church membership is approximately 250). An orientation meeting was held for instructions on how to knit or crochet, share patterns, discuss yarns and resources, and included free door prizes of needles, hooks, markers, guides, "Prayer Shawl Ministry" book, etc.
The first blessing and dedication was done by the pastor June 2007 with twelve shawls being blessed.
Recipents included men and women on the prayer list, in nursing homes or young people going off to college. Blessings and dedications were also done on an individual basis with the pastor so that shawls could be given away between times of congregational blessings, currently done twice a year.
This success attracted may other women and young girls to the Prayer Shawl Ministry. The second blessng of the shawls was held in December 2007 with the youngest participant being an 11 year old and the eldest a 90+ lady. The Prayer Shawl Ministry has been a blessing not only to the receipents but also to those who have lovingly and prayerfully made the shawls. This ministry continues to grow and includes people from the community being welcomed to participate. Routine meetings are not held but there is an annual orientation and ongoing discussions during church activities. The Outreach Ministry Committee receives updates and periodically a newsletter is mailed to all participants. Shawls may be displayed in the Gathering Area of the church and a notebook is maintained to record the works of the Prayer Shawl Ministry. Ephesians 2:10 is included in the ministry; "God has made us what we are. In Christ Jesus, God made us to do good works, which God planned in. "
